ALICE MERTON NO ROOTS

Alice Merton takes flight on debut single ‘No Roots’. Detailing her nomadic upbringing in which she moved eleven times across four countries, the singer-songwriter fiercely states “I’ve got no roots, but my home was never on the ground.” It’s a slice of chunky urban-pop in which a heavy bass forges a marching rhythm for Merton’s gypsy-esque tale. There’s also a strong undercurrent of indie-rock in the track, thanks to the bold drumbeat and intermittent fired-up guitars, perhaps already pulling Merton in a new direction. With vocal comparisons to Florence Welch and a cherry-tree hallmark of songwriter KT Tunstall, this currently Berlin-based artist has all the right qualities to ascend in the music world. As they say, watch this space. - HT
